The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC),Ogun State Chapter has advocated for need to raise bar for entry qualification for the police recruits, to enhance better performance and quality of the men of the force.

Penpushing reports that the Chairman, Dr Samson Kunle Popoola made the call at the Stakeholders Sensitization town hall meeting on Police Recruitment Exercise organised by the Police Service Commission for Lagos and Ogun States held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium Alausa Lagos State.

The High Chief expressed concern over the quality of recruits available for the force in view of desire of many young school leavers, and their parents to further their education in order to enhance their career opportunities.

Penpushing further reports that, Popoola pointed out that those left for the police to recruit will be the leftover and financially challenged ones, after the higher institutions would have mopped up the best amongst them.

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) boss wondered and expressed concern why it should be difficult to have constables, corporals or sergeants with higher degrees, if the emoluments are right.

Penpushing also reports that, Popoola frowned at difficulties facing state quotas for recruitment to be filled given the high unemployment rate in the country, noting that the condition of service and opportunity for career progression is making the police less attractive for brilliant and responsible applicants.

The chairman called on need for executive members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC)   at all levels be included in the list of guarantors for new recruits, stressing that the committee  remains the foster parents of the police and a trusted ally over the years.

Penpushing reports that, he charged the community to stop recommending touts, vagabonds and truants for police recruitment, explaining that  the police force is not a reformation centre, and in same vein, called for improved welfare for the officers and men in areas of housing, emoluments, allowances and modern gadgets to work with.

The Chairman Police Service Commission (PSC) Alhaji Musliu Smith (rtd) in his own contributions enumerated the success of the commission since he took office, which he said include the sharp rise in manpower recruitment, promotion and other incentives.

Penpushing further reports that, Smith called for collaboration and supports from the state and local governments, stressing that the federal government cannot do it alone, while in his remarks, Ogun State Commissioner of Police Lanre Sikiru Bankole thanked all the participants

Meanwhile, participants at the ceremony were offered the opportunity for various contributions, and also identified lapses on the part of the police for adequate corrections and improvement, which will be beneficial to the country.
