The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its nationwide industrial action, and this followed a marathon emergency meeting of the association which stretched from Sunday evening to early Monday morning
Penpushing reports that, the Doctors had embarked on the strike for nine weeks, but call if off after the umbrella body Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) had met earlier on Sunday, to address the grey areas, with a mandate from the leadership for suspension of the strike.
The President of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD),Dr Godiya Ishaya confirmed the suspension, adding that the National Executive Council(NEC) having reviewed the progress made so far agreed the strike should be suspended.
‘We’ve officially suspended the strike to resume at 8:00 am on Wednesday. We made the decision in the wee hours of today. We held an emergency meeting from 5:30 pm on Sunday to the morning hours of today, and the NEC decided that having reviewed the progress made so far, the strike should be suspended”,Ishaya stated
Penpushing further reports that, it is recalled that the Doctors on August 2, had commenced the industrial action following what was described as poor treatment of members by both the federal government and some state governments.
The Doctors are demanding, amongst other issues, the payment of coronavirus treatment allowances in the absence of death-in-service insurance, having lost over a dozen of its members to the pandemic, while also protesting the shortage of manpower in public hospitals.
