Nigeria police force inspector general set to retire, as Buhari searches for replacement

The Nigerian Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu is set to retire from service effective from Monday after mandatory 35 years in service, having joined the police force on February 1, 1986.

Penpushing reports that information also has it that, three Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and 10 Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) are equally due to retire from the force, and they include: Ibrahim Lamorde, former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) Aminchi Baraya and Nkpa Inakwu,all Deputy Inspector General.

The list also include Assistant Inspector Generals: Nkereuwem Akpan, Olafimihan Adeoye, Agunbiade Labore, Undie Adie and Olugbenga Adeyanju, while others are Asuquo Amba, Mohammad Mustapha, Jonah Jackson, Olushola Babajide and Yunana Babas.

Penpushing further reports that, President Muhammed Buhari recently pegs the retirement age of police officers at 60 years of age or 35 years of service in line with the amended Police Act, and by precedence and practice, a replacement for the Inspector General of Police ought to have been announced few days to Adamu’s retirement.

The new police act stipulates that a person to be appointed Inspector General shall be a senior police officer not below the rank of an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), while such a person must have an academic qualification of not less than a first degree or its equivalent in addition to professional and managerial experience.

Penpushing also reports that, in September 2020, the President assented to the Nigeria Police Bill, 2020, which was passed by the National Assembly, while part 111 Section 7 (6) of the Act prescribes a four-year single tenure for a person appointed to the office of the Inspector General of Police

The President would have to choose from the current Deputy Inspector Generals and Assistant Inspector Generals going by the amended Police Act which permits only the appointment of only officers on the cadres as Inspector General of Police

Penpushing reports that following the retirement of three Deputy Inspector Generals  and ten Assistant Inspector Generals the race is  now been limited to 33 eligible officers, and out of the officers, five are Deputy Inspector Generals while others are Assistant Inspector Generals.

The qualified Deputy Inspector Generals include: Sanusi Lemu, Usman Baba, David Folayiwo, Joseph Egbunike and Moses Jitoboh, while the Assistant Inspector Generals are: Garba Umar, Bello Sadiq, Illiyasu Ahmed, Dibal Yakadi, Zaki Ahmed, HH Karma, Baba Tijjani, Hafiz Inuwa, Lawal Ado, Austin Abonlahor and Isaac Akinmoyede.

Penpushing further reports the eligibility also include:  Dan Bature, Awuna Donald, Uba Kura, Johnson Kokumo, Zana Ibrahim, Murtala Usman, Maurice Abimbola, Bala Zama, Basen Dapiya, Haruna Mshelia, Aishatu Abubakar, Garba Umar, Aminu Pai, Gwandu Abubakar Omolulu Bishi, Ajani Olasupo and Dasuki Galadanci.

Meanwhile, it is recalled that the outgoing Inspector General of Police took over from Ibrahim Idris who retired in January 2019, and from the foregoing the President is expected to pick one amongst the eligible senior police officer to replace Adamu.
