Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has commiserated with the wife of late former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, who transitioned to glory on October 19, 2026, at the age of 71.
Penpushing reports that Obasanjo in a condolence letter written to Deaconess Roli Uduaghan, the widow said he received with sadness the passing of her beloved husband, adding that Nigeria has lost a fine gentleman, a dedicated medical professional, and a consummate statesman
‘On behalf of my family and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to you, your children, the Uduaghan and Tuoyo families, and the good people of Delta State. Nigeria has lost a fine gentleman, a dedicated medical professional, and a consummate statesman whose steady hands guided Delta State through critical periods of socio-political development’, Obasanjo wrote.
Penpushing further reports that he fondly remember his close interactions with Uduaghan during his tenure as President, when he served with distinction under Governor James Ibori, first as Commissioner for Health and later as Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
‘Even during those turbulent political eras and the intense regional agitations in the Niger Delta, Emmanuel stood out as a brilliant administrator and a calm voice of reason’, Obasanjo emphasised.
‘Whether we were interfacing on critical healthcare policies or navigating complex Federal-State dynamics, his administrative acumen and loyalty to the peace and progress of Delta State were always evident’, he stated.
‘It was during those intense years of engagement that I grew to respect his intellect and problem-solving capacity, traits that prepared him seamlessly for the higher calling of leadership when he assumed office as Executive Governor in 2007’.
‘True to his medical training, he approached governance with a surgical, calming touch. He understood that peace and security were the foundational pillars needed to unlock economic prosperity’.
‘His visionary blueprint, the “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative, was ahead of its time. Emmanuel recognized the volatility of a mono-product economy and aggressively championed diversification’.
‘It was this shared passion for sustainable development that brought us together in a highly successful partnership between Obasanjo Farms and the Delta State Government under his watch. Driven by his deep commitment to food security, wealth generation, and job creation for his people, this collaboration created sustainable livelihoods across the State’.
‘As a physician in politics, his heart was always with the vulnerable. His revolutionary Free Maternal Health Care and Free Under-Five Healthcare programs saved thousands of lives, leaving an indelible legacy in the hearts of everyday citizens’.
‘Whether navigating Nigeria’s complex political landscape or offering elder statesmanship after his formal retirement, Emmanuel remained an indispensable oracle of wisdom’, Obasanjo wrote.
‘My dear sister Roli, I know that no words can completely erase the sharp pain of losing your lifelong partner. You were his anchor, his prayer warrior, and his grace throughout his public life. Do not mourn like those who have no hope. Celebrate the beautiful memories, his profound impact, and a name left untarnished’.
‘May the Almighty God grant you, your children, and the entire family the inner strength and divine peace to bear this irreplaceable loss. May the gentle soul of His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, rest in perfect peace’, the statement added.
